SAHR demands lifting of emergency; release of detainees in Pakistan

South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR) unequivocally condemns the imposition of emergency rule in Pakistan and the arrest of political activists, lawyers, human rights activists including Mr. I. A. Rehman and Ms. Asma Jahangir, who are among the most respected members of SAHR.
SAHR also deplores the blatant interference and intimidation of the judiciary.
We demand the immediate revocation of emergency rule as it flies in the face of democratic values and urges democratic governments, the international community, INGOs and NGOs to impress upon the rulers of Pakistan that they must desist from all actions which violate norms of democracy and human rights and restore Pakistan to the rule of law.
SAHR expresses its solidarity with the people of Pakistan who have always struggled against undemocratic and authoritarian governance.
